PopCap chills out, brings the zen to Xbox Live Arcade in Bejeweled 3

But hey, it's definitely cheaper than when the game first released to PC and Mac last year, and consider what you're getting in that (digital) package. Bejeweled 3 sports twice the game modes as Bejeweled 2, and comes packed with "leaderboards for Classic, Lightning, Poker, Butterflies, Ice Storm and Diamond Mine, plus four special gems, five elite badges, and 15 achievements," according to PopCap.

Territories Could Blow Alliance Play Wide Open

During our chat, Holloway had something brand new to show coming soon to Edgeworld. (Though, it's still in the concept phase, so weren't provided images.) It's a feature tentatively known as "Territories," and the game's producer hopes that it will expand Alliance play into something even more meaningful.

"We haven't seen a past feature like this that I can think of, and we all play a lot of games," Holloway gushes about what he's about to show me. "We're trying to make this a deeper, more robust 4X or empires building game."

Kabam on Edgeworld's release and what battles lie ahead [Interview]

Inspired by sci-fi staples like Star Wars, Star Trek and even the Halo series of shooter games, Edgeworld is the culmination of Kabam's ongoing mission to bring a true 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) game experience to Facebook. Since the game's "open beta" release in August, the team is hard at work to make that vision a reality as it claims to have in previous games. (As of this writing, the game enjoys over 858,000 monthly players, according to AppData.)

PS Vita to usher the 'social gaming revolution' stateside next February

Sony has played up the console's social features more than its powerful hardware, which, of course, has piqued our interest. The company seems to consider the PS Vita's social gaming features "revolutionary". While some of us may not buy it, the most notable of which is Near, a feature that allows the system to communicate with nearby PS Vita consoles. Through this, players can compete in local multiplayer matches, share in-game gifts (like on Facebook?) and compare players statistics.

Order & Chaos Online accounts hacked on both Facebook and mobile

Here we go again. Pocket Gamer reports that French mobile and social game company Gameloft has confirmed that a number of Order & Chaos Online players on both Facebook and mobile devices have had their accounts hacked. Gameloft digital marketing and community manager Callum Rowley told Pocket Gamer that Gameloft is investigating the breach.

If DeNA's Kaito Royale got a TV series, could a FarmVille movie work?

Of course, we can't help but wonder what this means for future films and TV shows based on casual or social game products. The Angry Birds movie is very real, and set to land in 2014, while a FarmVille flick is at least in talks right now. But because of how early the supposed FarmVille movie is in its creation, that could go either way at this point.

Rumour: Is Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio Coming To Soul Calibur?

Joystiq has just received a photo from an ‘anonymous tipster’, claiming that Ezio Auditore de Firenze from Assassin’s Creed is featured in Namco Bandai’s upcoming Soul Calibur 5.
If you click through the link, you’ll see a photograph, taken at a recent tournament, where a Beta version of Soul Calibur V was being shown.
We’re inclined to believe the rumour. Far, far stranger things have happened in the series, which has become known for its guest fighters. Both Yoda and Darth Vader featured in Soul Calibur IV, and I remember Link being incredibly overpowered in the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur II.
We’ve reached out to Ubisoft for confirmation and will update if we hear anything further.

Behold: A New Rubik’s Cube World Champion

Last weekend, a new Rubik’s cube world champion was crowned in Bangkok. Polish speedcuber Michal Pleskowicz won the event by completing a Rubik’s Cube in 8.65 seconds, almost a second faster than the first runner-up, American Rowe Hessler, who clocked in at 9.56 seconds.
Good gravy. That is some fast ‘cubing. The event was held at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok, and hosted over 350 competitors from over 40 countries. The championship took place over a number of different events with a number of different cubes, with timed events, number of moves, and more. The full list of events can be found on the championship webpage.

Meet Brendan Brewer, Video Game Reviewer

Cameron Davis used to review video games for a living, then he switched sides and started making games for a living and was present for both the demise of Krome and KMM Brisbane. Now, he still works in the games industry, but spends his spare time with Brendan Brewer – a comic skewering games ‘journalists’ and the review process. Some of it is a little too close to home for me…

Confession time – I was moved to front of the queue at the Halo 3 midnight launch, because someone recognised that I was covering it for a magazine. I was asked if I wanted to move to the front, and I didn’t say no. I just went, and I got the game before all the people in front of me in the queue.

I’m so, so sorry…

Vietnam Was Hell, Not A Series Of Green Corridors

Vietnam is a war that still looms large in the American psyche, both in terms of its impact in modern history and its portrayal in popular culture. Yet for all the protests, rock n’ roll and classic films that came out of the war, good Vietnam video games are hard to find.

This is mostly because what made the war, what defined the nature of the conflict, wasn’t something you could easily replicate in a game. Open wars, fought on battlefields between identifiable combatants, are easy. That’s why there are so many shooters and strategy games based on the Second World War. Those wars had regions of control, and rules, and those are the kind of things you need for a video game.

Vietnam did not. It was a war fought everywhere and nowhere. There were no front lines, enemies were tough to distinguish from friends (or at least the innocent). What defined it, then, was not a clash of arms, two sides meeting in open battle. It was the jungle, the mystery, the confusion.

Games have found it tough to replicate this, most – Black Ops most recently – simply using it as a backdrop for just another corridor shooter, which captures neither the accuracy or the feel of the war. There’s one game, though, that did. And it managed this back in 1993.

Remember This? [Update]

Can you remember this game from one single pic? This screenshot is overwhelmingly green, but I have faith in you guys. If you don’t get it, I’ll drop a second part of the screenshot in the afternoon!
Adding the second part for your guessing pleasure (I’ve made it too easy now!)

Thinking About Importing A 3G PlayStation Vita Into Australia? Read This First…

The pricing of the PlayStation Vita has raised some eyebrows. Most expected the Wifi enabled version to retail at $349.95, but $449.95 for the 3G Vita? That’s a bit too much to take for some. As a result you may find yourself tempted to import a 3G unit from overseas, but before you do, you might want to double check a few things.

Here are a few potential pitfalls you may want to be aware of. Bear in mind this is just some semi-informed guess work. We know that AT&T is partnering with Sony for Vita in the US, but we don’t yet have any full information with regards to how that will work precisely.

AT&T could simply lock the Vita
If this is the case, you’ll simply have to wait (and hope) for a jailbreak. There’s no reason that a GSM locked Vita shouldn’t work over WiFi in the meantime, but why spend money on 3G and not be able to use it? If this is the case, you might just want to play it safe with the Wifi version.

There could be frequency problems
The official FAQ on the Vita is annoyingly vague in this respect; it simply says that it supports “Mobile network connectivity (3G/Wi-Fi model only) 3G modem (data communication): HSDPA/HSUPA, GSM”. There’s a clue in the fact that AT&T is the US data partner, though; AT&T’s frequency for 3G in the states is on the 850MHz band. That’s fine for Telstra customers, and passable for Vodafone ones if you’re within range of a Vodafone 850Mhz tower, but it’d lock out Optus customers, as it uses 900Mhz for its 3G. That’s assuming it’s not a quad-band device, but it’s worth bearing in mind if the US models are indeed custom chipped. If it’s a quad-band device then the frequency issues are null and void to an extent.

You’ll need to get the settings right
Still keen? Good on you! The other thing you’ll need are your carrier’s APN settings. Again, there’s nothing clear here (and won’t be until the Vita launches), but in order to actually get sweet, sweet 3G data flowing, you’ll need the access point name for your carrier as well as any other required login details. These vary by carrier and whether you’re throwing in a prepaid or postpaid SIM; your best bet here is to google “Australian APN details” or similar when you get your Vita and follow through the setup process. It’s possible the Vita may pick up the correct details from the SIM, but if you can’t get data flowing, it’s worth checking that the APN details are correct, and that it’s not desperately trying to contact AT&T’s servers.

Ultimately, this is an issue we’ll know more about closer to the release of the Vita, but for now it’s probably worth being aware of the various issues that arise when importing a 3G enabled device from the US. If you’re importing, our recommendation is to play it safe with the Wifi version – but then, you’ll get the most bang for your buck by importing a 3G unit.

It’s a tough choice – but stay informed, and wait until you’re absolutely sure your 3G enabled PS Vita will work in Australia.

What has online multiplayer done to games and gamers?

Since the Xbox and the rest of this gen, online gaming has become a huge part of the gaming experience. In almost every game you find there’s online play, or at least some sort of online components. There are games that even full focus on online, MMOs, “MAG”, and such. We can all agree that it brought us gamers a lot of benefits, but what is also taken away.

The Good

The main purpose of online play: to bring people together from all over. Being the MLK of games, it has allowed you to play with a friend all the way in Wisconsin, US. It solved the problem of only childs (is that right) who love competition. It’s brought people a little more closer. Online play has/can also boost up replay value exponentially. Instead of doing speed runs and learn ever inch and glitch of the game, it can always be a new experience with new players. Of course it all depends on if it was done right. And let’s not forget DLC. DLC has also been able to extend replay value and deliver things that could fit into the game or could make it in.

The Bad

If that wasn’t good enough reasons to satisfy you, well then there’s nothing I could do as it only gets worse. The first problem is the contract. No not the terms of agreement, I’m talking about Xbox Live. Yes it only MS doing this but 360 players make up most of the gamers today, and having to pay a subscription fee, it seems weird to pay for internet and to use the internet to gain internet use. Still it’s not a major, nor a minor problem. Another thing is DLC. While I noted it as a good thing there is also a bad side, pricing and the content. I wasn’t a PC gamer for a long time, but I believe that DLC or add-on content was more worthwhile actually adding depth to the story or truly extending the value of the game. Very few games successfully do this, while some make you pay a fee for recycled content.

A major problem however is what it’s done to developers. With online being major with casual gamers, some devs think it must have online to make sales (Bioshock 2 anyone). With that single player get hurt badly, and those who were/are all about speed runs and such, the story was too boring, too short, or too easy to go at it again. Devs also get lazy on both sides sometimes, making a boring SP and MP. Another thing is when making online multiplayer, split-screen is left out. Devs need to realize how MP started, what makes it worse is when online co-op is there.

But THAT isn’t even the biggest issue. The biggest problem is what it’s done to the gamers. Multiplayer was invented to share the fun across the world; however people have started only caring about rank and K/D and the glitches to get them to the top. This sounds mostly like COD and that’s where it’s truly shown. Noobs constantly trying to find combination and permeations to make on a top 100 list that no one, not even the devs, care about. There are those players that just sit in their rooms waiting for a fly to come their way and kill it. Really I just can’t stress how much I hate this. SSBB, believe it or not, actually succeeded by not including rank; however there were some who still those who only care about winning and being top dog by using the lag from the crappy servers. It’s something hard to fix you can’t blame the devs, even IW; it was just them giving to much freedom and players who found the right combo. Taking out rank won’t help as the players just want to win, you can only hope for a change of mind. /dreaming

What to expect from the next generation of consoles (Microsoft)

As much as we're loving our current system(s), we need to let reality sit in, and get ready for the next set of consoles soon.

The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 making it 5 years old (aka the average life cycle for a console), and next year's line up of games is looking pretty grim. Which leads me to believe their going to try and live off of 3rd party support and Kinect until their ready to show their new console.

So what should we realistically expect from the console.

In all honesty I don't think Microsoft is going to try and blow us away hardware wise this gen. Both Microsoft and Sony have seen Nintendo's success, and Microsoft will want that same success for themselves. Sony is no longer Microsoft's target, Nintendo is. And ultimately I think that may be a huge mistake to make, but nevertheless here's what to expect from Microsoft.

CPU: MS will go with a multi-core CPU. The next generation of consoles will do much more than gaming as this gen already does, and MS will want to stay competitive in this regard and a multi-core processor will be perfect for the job. To keep things inexpensive Microsoft will most likely use a custom designed Quad Core processor by IBM (here's hoping to a 6 core processor).

Price: $125

GPU: MS will use ATI once again, to design a custom dedicated graphics card sporting 1GB of DDR3 RAM specifically for the card. This will be enough to move console graphics forward, without spending a fortune.

Price: $80

RAM: This is going to be the toughest choice. They're going to use DDR3 RAM, but the decision they'll have to make is to use 2GB or 4GB. If they use 4GB they won't be completely outclassed by the PS4, but the price of their console will be higher to produce than they want. But if they use 2GB it'll be more cost efficient, but the PS4 will outclass it. 3GB would probably be their best bet, and even though it's a completely odd number to use that may be the direction they go.

Price:

2GB: $40
3GB: $70
4GB: $100

Storage: Will the new console use Blu Ray, HD DVD, Dual layer DVD, SD cards, or digital download only? DVD is out of the question by now, and a couple Blu Ray disc are being filled by PS3 games, so HD DVD may not be enough either. MS is going to have to use Blu Ray or some high capacity storage media for their next console, because the world isn't ready just yet for a completely download only console.

Price: $60

HDD: The main thing is how much space will be available and whether or not they go proprietary (which I'm sure they will). HDD size should be around 500GB, since I believe they'll allow you to bring over all of your Xbox 360 content by purchasing a cable to sync you HDD to the USB ports, and 500GB should be plenty.

Price: $50
Your Price: $150

Everything else: Well since we have the main components, we just have to figure a price for everything else. The motherboard will be cheap, networking capabilities will be cheap, Audio Video will be cheap, USB 3.0 will be cheap (expect at least 4 ports), etc...

Price: $150

Overall: I'll play it safe here and use the median of the prices. So after adding everything together the 360 specs should be as followed.

CPU: Custom IBM Quad Core 3.2Ghz
GPU: Custom ATI 1GB GPU @ 700 - 900mhz
RAM: 2GB/3GB/4GB DDR3 1333 (I used 3GB for the final total)
HDD: 500GB HDD @ 7200 rpm
Rest:1080p display, 3D display, 7.1 Dolby, etc...

$125 + $80 + $70 + 60 + $50 + $150 = $535

But remember buying in bulk produces discounts so expect MS to get 20% off bringing their total down to.

$428

And with that theoretical information expect the Xbox 720 or whatever MS calls it to launch at.

$399 for a 500GB version

This means they'll be selling each console at a loss of $40 dollars, however, they'll practically break even thanks to Xbox live being $60 a year now (They would break even, because not everyone will buy the $60 subscription some will get every 3 months or every month depending on what they can afford). Which is an ideal position to be in.

With several iphone games at your fingertips, a sleeper is amongst us… what is it you ask? Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior for the high price of $.99. There’s a story mode, Arcade Mode and Time Trials Mode. Touch controls are easy to use and mastering a finish move will have stunned with realism. So give it go for only $.99. This is a must have for any Bruce Lee fan. Enjoy

Disney-branded Facebook games coming in 2012, Playdom head says

Can we all just say, “finally?” During a panel named “The Rise of Social Games” at the f8 Facebook Developers Conference in San Francisco, Disney Interactive and Playdom head John Pleasants revealed that two to four Facebook games surrounding Disney xd brands will hit Facebook in 2012. The general topic of the panel was the fact that branded social games are taking off.

Pleasants was joined on the panel by Kabam CEO Kevin Chou, EA Interactive head Barry Cottle and Zynga CBO Owen Van Natta. Facebook director of games partnerships Sean Ryan moderated the panel with the preface that branded games will take over the Facebook platform. And he might be right: EA just released The Sims Social, Zynga will soon re-brand its new Adventure World with Indiana Jones and Kabam recently announced The Godfather: Five Families.

Playdom, which Disney acquired in July 2010 for a whopping $740 million, is ahead of the pack with two branded games on Facebook: ESPNU College Town and ESPN Sports Bar & Grill. Both games performed well, thanks to advertising through the ESPN TV network. While Disney owns the ESPN brand, notice how neither of those actually involve the insanely popular Disney characters we’ve come to love.

Honestly, we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Consider this: Disney has its own cable TV channel through which it could, in theory, advertise whatever it wants. Pleasants didn’t get into why it’s taken this long for disney channel games to throw its cast of characters into Facebook games, but did reveal the power of the Disney name.

Gnome Town, which Playdom launched in the summer–and we enjoyed quite a bit–peaked at 530,000 daily players. But just plopping the Disney logo on top of the existing one made users more likely to spend in the game just through trust of the company’s name, according to Pleasants. “We think it’s an advantage, if you put game play first,” Pleasants said.

It’s comforting to hear this emphasized by these developers. (Kabam’s Chou shared the same sentiment.) Branded games on Facebook are OK in my book, but the last thing anyone wants to see is the genre become a branding machine.

Months on... Has Move or Kinect made an Impact?

I myself own both Move and Kinect, and from what I've experienced, it cannot make much of an impact when developers aren't using it in their games, but why aren't they using it?

Simple, People can't afford to fork out another $200 Dollars for Kinect or Move (Yes, I realize the price isn't exact..), but I'd assume everyone has realized that by now, so the question on everyone's mind at the moment is... What was the point of even releasing these "Addon's"?

Well, From what I can tell, it was basically a move by both Sony and Microsoft to try to eliminate the "Other" company, we all know as Nintendo, although it hasn't gone to plan as much as they expect I'd assume, though, slowly, it is making an impact on the market.

But, in the end, both of these products are just for Casual Family entertainment, but frankly, Family's aren't as Social as they use to be, so there's another reason why it didn't impact the market.

Death to: Episode 1, World of Warcraft

The headline might sound a bit harsh, but there will come a time when World of Warcraft is shut down physically. I've been a WoW-player for nearly 6 years and today I can't understand (in general, the game still has its moments) why I became so "addicted" to this one game.

World of Warcraft is an MMORPG (duh!). You play with a billion other players (well that measurement is probably better for the money Blizz earn each month) but you get the drift. Some people love the multiplayer aspect of the game and some prefer to go on questing on their own, just minding their own busniness. World of Warcraft is beginning to show its age and its flaws. Believe me, it has serious flaws, at least from my perspective. Now, I can't just say "IT SUCKZ", "WORST GAME EVAH", "IT'S CRAP" without telling you why. Well I can, but that would be "fanboy-ish" of me. Let me start of with the graphics.

The graphics in World of Warcraft is seriously outdated (The new water is perhaps the only thing that is a little "newer"). The game was released in 2004 and Blizz probably started working on it in 1999 or 2000. Having outdated graphics has its advantages, the game can run on almost every computer out there (Maybe not grandpas computer from the 80's). The graphics are becoming more and more important in games today, not simply because it "looks better" but because it today plays a much more important role in making a game that truly captures the player and feels truly immersive. Good graphics doesnt mean actual great looking graphics sometimes, just look at Minecraft, but the role it plays is very important. Blizzard is working on their new MMO so expect to see a huge leap in graphics compared to WoW when it releases. Personally I’m tired of looking at fake trees and generic looking hills and caves.

The other aspect of World of Warcraft concerning graphics that I don’t like is the way they reuse their models so often. Sure they put another texture on, but its still the same model. How many times have you done quests that takes you into a building, cave and whatnot and known exactly where to go? You know that because they re-use the same things over and over again. And here comes the next part of World of Warcraft that I do not like (anymore).

The gameplay in World of Warcraft is horrible by my standards. Today its a shallow, quick fix that is as unrewarding as it can be. Surely some would argue that PvP-is the best and it is in some ways. But what does that give you? Well if you like a new piece of gear that makes you hit a tiny bit harder or a rank that means nothing then sure. Do remember that this is my personal opinion and I don’t presume that everyone feels the same. World of Warcraft doesn’t have the guts to let the classes be truly unique and have truly unique and valuable skills. The system has been dumb down to a bland soup. The classes have very similar skills, a lot of them share roles (How fun wouldn’t it be if you had a class that actually mattered? Of course you need tanks, healers and dps); 4 classes can tank, 4 classes can heal and ALL classes can dps. I mean, common... There is so much potential in making truly unique roles and unique classes. But that would probably not be as accessible for everyone.

After playing the new expansion “Cataclysm” as a Goblin, I want to salute Blizzard for bringing in the clowns of the world of Warcraft. Goblins are, by far, the funniest race I have ever played as and they, as a race, feel truly unique.

What I don’t like is that there are no new classes. And the classes that exist are not distinctive (Sure, we do have DPS, Tank and Healer), nor does it matter what race/class combination you choose. You will always be able to do everything, and get all achievements.

I wish that the choice of class and race would have a significant impact on some parts of the game-play and its events. I have always wondered why the different races get “racial” abilities that are insignificant in comparison to other skills. The racial abilities could do so much more and actually mean something other than being just another skill.

For example, when playing as goblin you get an ability which enables you blast yourself forward much like the mages “blink” ability. This ability could be used for so much more. Why not have dungeons (instances) where it actually matters what races you have in the team? The goblin ability could come to use in an event where the player needs to time it to jumping through or over some gap in the floor to do something on the other side so that the rest of the group can pass and go that way. If you don’t have a goblin in your group, you can’t take that path. Or a hunter for example, that must send his or her pet through a hole in the wall and guide it to some button on the other side to open a tunnel or whatever? Or the DK’s death-grip could be used for pulling a distant lever, grabbing a rock on the other side or something like that.

I would love that. I would love those moments where my class/race actually contributes to the path that my group can take. As it is now, almost every instance feels the same. You just fight your way from point A, being the start of the instance, to point B being the end or exit. Nothing special in between. Just some bosses and enemies that are always the same, every time you do these instances.

I would also love if professions would also work this way. An engineer could repair some machinery to open up one path, while a miner (several miners could be required) can clear a path for the group. So much could be done with all of this. I hope that I will someday see these kinds of things in World of Warcraft. It would greatly enhance my gaming experience. As an RPG World of Warcraft seriously lacks some role-playing.

Angry Birds for PC

Finally, those birds that everybody likes has arrived on PC. After iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile versions, also iPhone cases and toys, Angry Birds has finally arrived on the PC thanks to the Intel App Up store. It’ll work fine and dandy on laptops and netbooks and will cost you only $4.99 to download. Nice price for this lovely game.

Angry Birds is a global phenomenon in mobile gaming and the top grossing iPhone app of 2010. So if you’re not a smart-phone wielding hipster, you no longer have an excuse not to be part of this franchise.

Overall it’s pretty much an identical game play experience to the iPhone app, with some minor differences. It’s snappy, gorgeous, and it sounds amazing. On the netbook version you use a mouse or trackpad instead of touch. There is an open hand icon when the mouse is in hover state, and a closed hand icon when you are clicking or dragging. This visible clue when pulling the slingshot is a nice aid. It allows you to fine tune shots more than just observing the angle of the slingshot band.

Angry Birds for PC

Larger screen means more visibility in the game. On many levels you can see the target that can’t be seen on the iPhone. The previous shot trail is more easily seen, allowing fine tuning of your next shot. Overall the animations and physics seem to have more fluidity.

In terms of features, options, menu etc it’s pretty close to the original. On the netbook the replay level icon has been added to the game space. So you don’t need to pause first then replay. If you start off with bad shot, just click the replay icon, then you can start over. Saving a click is nice. There is a Menu button in the Pause menu that gets you back to the Start screen. There are some things not in play on the netbook version. The leader board and achievements are not available in the main menu. The Golden Eggs are there.

      - Angry Birds PC Updated

The PC version was updated last week which we talked about in this post. This update will finally include all episodes of Ham ‘Em High and the two chapters of Mine and Dine. I’m sure this is welcome news for all the PC players who have been feeling left out. It shouldn’t have taken this long to get all the episodes out but that’s in the past now so lets just get to playing. Since all the chapters are available you also have access to all of the golden eggs. You can finally complete your collection!

As a side note because I didn’t want to do an entire post about the subject, have you all seen the Angry Birds bra? It’s available over on etsy  you should go check it out. I personally don’t know anyone who would wear it but i’m sure there is someone out there  who would. I don’t recommend buying this for you girlfriend or wife unless she really loves angry birds.

There may not be another Zynga game in which Energy is more important than in Adventure World. Every switch thrown, every puzzle solved and beastie whacked costs you the Facebook game juice. Players often find themselves without Energy minutes into an Expedition. But this isn't the time for whining--it's time to show you the value of upgrading your Tools and how to do it.

Tools: The Game Changer
If you noticed, each piece of debris and monster has a life bar, and normally take multiple hits with your Whip or Machete to whittle down. This, of course, quickly becomes a waste in later Expeditions purely due to the amount of obstacles in your path. But increasing the amount of damage your various Tools inflict against said baddies could considerably reduce the Energy spend in-game.

For instance, say a Snake has three hit points and is Level 5. Since monsters can hit back in this game, it could take three to five Energy before an enemy goes down. Now, imagine if you had upgraded your Whip to Level 2. Offing that Snake would take just two to four Energy with a beefier Whip. The same situation applies to Tools like the Machete.
Adventure World Tool Shop inside
And Now For Your How-To
Adventure World Tool Shop outsideUpgrading your Tools in Adventure World is simple. All you need to do is head back to Base Camp from an Expedition, and look for a makeshift hut that should already be in place in your headquarters. When you click on the Tool Shop, a window will appear featuring all the Tools you've found thus far on your journeys. Click on the Tool you wish to upgrade.

Once you click on a Tool to upgrade, you'll notice that each Tool costs Coins to upgrade. That's it--no asking friends to help you out with materials or farming certain crops for special items. Just the goods you find during your travels in search of El Dorado. However, Coins are actually quite rare in this game, so you'll need to save and spend wisely.

When you have enough Coins for an upgrade, just click on the appropriate icon to pay up. Tool upgrades are also level-locked, meaning you must reach a certain level for most Tools before being able to upgrade them using Coins. If you're feeling impatient, you could always unlock access to those higher level Tools early using Adventure Cash.

Just One Small Catch...
However, some Tool upgrades do require an extra boost: your Tool Shop. Yes, the building itself can be upgraded, too. And this time, you will need items from your friends. (Just think of how things work in CityVille.) Luckily, you only have to do this about twice to unlock access to all of the game's Tools. Then, it's back onto leveling up to access new upgrades for Coins.
Adventure World Tool Shop Upgrade
Upgraded Tools are hands-down the way to go, if you want to save precious Energy for the good stuff, that is. You know, exploring ... uncovering the secrets of El Dorado? That kind of stuff. Your wallet might thank us later.

Playstation Network downtime

The Playstation Network has been down now for over 3 days and the effects are starting to show. There has been the usual rage, despair and oaths never to touch Sony product ever again.

My own PS3 died last week after 4 years of gaming and good times. I was able to copy most of my saved data and I had bought a new slim 320 GB PS3. But because of the downtime I haven't been able to log on PSN and verify that the saves are actually mine so I haven't been able to play. For this I am little irritated of course. I was for example under one percent away from completing Red Dead Redemption 100% and thought that it would had been a fine thing to do this easter.

Last year there was fear that PS3 had a console breaking bug that prevented PS3 from working because the internal clock was confused about the date. The consequences have been very much the same this time. There have been the articles about changing to Xbox and what are gamers doing while PS3 is out of use (playing on PC of course).
At first when Sony didn't maybe actually know what caused the network going down there was very little information. Many concluded that Anonymous was behind this attack. Their lengthy campaign against Sony has been going on for couple of weeks because of Sony suing Geohotz. When Sony didn't actually verify this info at first many were already reacting to it. There was and is many new articles about why the Anonymous made a mistake attacking PSN instead of only Sony and its employees.

I personally think that Anonymous made a mistake attacking PSN causing more inconvenience on the consumers than on Sony. This was probably a move that cost more supporters on Anonymous than to Sony.

At the moment the PSN is still down eventhough Anonymous has stated that the attack has been halted. Sony has responded that they are building the PSN more secure at the moment and this is the reason network is still down. If this is true or not can't be really confirmed as Sony has been very scarce giving info on the situation and you never really should trust Anonymous.

I for one have been enjoying Metro 2033 while the PSN has been down. The game costs 10 euros on Steam sale. If you are fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R or Fallout and don't mind playing a little linear game then it is worth the price.

Best we can now hope is probably Sony fixing the network soon. Maybe Sony hires the cyberpolice to backtrace Anonymous IP addresses

RDR: Undead Nightmare, or "How to push gameplay mechanics past their breaking point"

Red Dead Redemption's a game that interested me from the start. However, my experience with GTAIV was less than pleasant because of the game's (IMO) extremely poor gameplay. And because RDR obviously runs on the same engine, I had my reservations. But recently the game was on sale for 20$, and at the same time all its DLC was available as a bundle for 10$ on the PSN--essentially a 90$ value for 30$, I couldn't refuse.

I quickly poured 50 hours into RDR, finished the story and earned all the offline trophies, and mostly enjoyed my experience. The gameplay did sour the experience a few times, but overall it was a positive experience. I have to say, the entire time I was playing RDR, I had Undead Nightmare in the back of my mind; I couldn't wait to finish the main game and dig into the quirky DLC story. Well, I'm not even 10 hours into the latter, and already it's one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. And the sentiment is worsened by the fact that this game has incredible potential for fun. Most of the problem lies in the gameplay, but some of it is also in the story and the missions.

I'll get the story and missions out of the way first, because it's easier to explain: out of the great cast of RDR, most of the returning characters are the idiots. They make for a quirky experience, but doing jobs for these morons gives me absolutely no sense of purpose and no drive to push into the story. I won't spoil anything, but doing a fetch quest in the furthest corners of the game's US States for a known hack to concoct some new fraudulent potion doesn't motivate me. Also, I did a side-quest where I'm asked to slaughter a clearly peaceful species, completing it for the sake of completing it because I have no other choice, and at the end of it I'm supposed to be surprised at the revelation that this was a peaceful and intelligent species I just murdered into extinction. Oh, is that why they were just walking away from me and showing no signs of aggression the entire time? I had absolutely no idea...

Now for the gameplay... I already mentioned my feeling that GTAIV's gameplay was atrocious, and I have to say RDR improved on it greatly. The shooting mechanics are a lot sounder, and the movement a little snappier. But the action in both games isn't so fast, so it was rare that the gameplay actually hindered or broke the experience. But the action in Undead Nightmare is a lot faster, and enemies come at you from all sides. It was frustrating in RDR to get stuck on an obstacle John should easily have over-stepped; it's infuriating in UN to get stuck on the same obstacle and get surrounded by zombies as a result. If it weren't for regenerating health, this game would be intolerable (this coming from someone who hates regenerating health, by the way).

Not only does Marston get stuck on the most meaningless of objects, but he's also handicapped in the way he goes around them. If his body is pointing in a direction, and I want to go in another, John can't simply start walking in the new direction, he has to do some sort of retarded circular jog until he's going where I want it to. It may look a little better than straight up walking in a new direction, but it's extremely impractical in tight quarters, and when you're trying to mount a ladder, or climb stairs--hell, it's often difficult to walk into a door because he'll just circle to the other side of the frame and be unable to make a tight enough turn to walk through it. Again: annoying in RDR, infuriating in UN becaue this slightest of delays has caused you to be surrounded by zombies.

Two more annoyances both concern combat: running, and changing weapons. The weapon wheel is extremely impractical. It's over-cluttered, and slow to change weapons in the heat of battle, especially when you're surrounded by 15 running-dead. Also, the directional pad is criminally wasted. You have 4 perfectly good buttons to change weapons in a snap with, but instead R* assigned them meaningless functions and assigned a weapon wheel to L2. Here, Rockstar, let me do your job for you: L2 can toggle between over-the-shoulder views, and the d-pad can switch between any number of weapons, pre-selected from the pause menu, with simple 1 or 2 taps. Quick, easy, and very gameplay-friendly. Last, and definitely least problem of the game in that it's the stupidest: DON'T ASSIGN THE X BUTTON TO RUN. In an action game, the DEFAULT MOVEMENT SPEED SHOULD ALREADY BE RUN. Do I need to explain why I shouldn't have to tap the X button while I'm being chased by a mob of zombies? Hint: it has to do with the fact that I only have one right thumb. Said thumb should be on the stick, positioning the camera behind me, so I can shoot these zombies, instead of mashing the X button. Same goes for the fucking horse that refuses to move at any reasonable speed until I've mashed the X button 5 or 6 times, and who slows to a crawl as soon as I stop mashing to turn the camera and shoot someone. The "Dead Eye" gameplay mechanic is clearly a crutch put into the game for two reasons: 1. Rockstar assumes all gamers are noobs, and 2. R* doesn't know how to make action-game-friendly movement mechanics. If I didn't have to mash the X button, I could aim while running, even on horseback, and wouldn't need your stupid Dead Eye. R*, if you absolutely must have a walking speed, make holding X do it, rather than mashing it to run. Or better yet, just make slight movements of the stick walk, and further movements run--simple, and you've freed the X button for another function.

That 'epic' quality

Nowadays I don't have the same amount of time to waste on video games that I did as a kid. Now, I take all the wasted time I can get to play them! It's a shame that I cannot muster up the excitement I once had for games that I owned when I was a child. Though, I do not think that this is a result of the amount of time that I have to play games. For me, I think it's because of the cynical adult life that I have grown up to live (and inevitably everyone does); and this is a huge shame.

We can all recall the excitement we had for Christmas when we were young, our minds were filled with joy and we didn't really have any concept of the big wild world beyond our bedroom. I realized that during this time I found games that would inspire me and I would fondly return to them many times, whatever my age. Games such as Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy and Goldeneye to name but a few. However, these games are regarded by many, to be some of the best games of all-time. Which makes me wonder: Is it me, or are games getting stale?

For some reason, I'm inclined to think it's me. Since the wealth and ability of technology has vastly been upgraded from the good ole' 90's surely this has enabled some game to create the universe that I can be completely and utterly absorbed within? Sadly, there hasn't. Now at this point I'd just like to point out that many of the post 90's games, leading up to the current generation have produced many great titles that I've thoroughly enjoyed. But despite my effort's to emulate the excitement that I had from my childhood games I've never quite managed to find one that has done so. They never quite reach the same 'epic' quality as the games from my childhood.

I understand that many bloggers talk about the subject of games with a strong sense of nostalgia. Furthermore, gamer's as a collective have fond memories and experiences of their treasured games in the past. Though my lack of excitement may well be a product of both stale games and aging, it's hard to come to terms with why nothing has provided that 'epic' quality I've been longing for.

Is it true that I've become someone who can no longer appreciate the grand designs of modern games or have video games just lost their spark? It's interesting to see how highly my childhood games are continuing to be praised at present. Games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time are still huge and it is still widely considered to be the best-game-ever by many. So are the games also to blame? Has nothing been able to top the epic quest of Link? Or am I just missing the wave of optimism and excitement in the game industry. I'm aware there is a lot of hype, that I buy into from time to time. Though, sadly, the excitement never lives up to it. It's alarming that I can't relive the same excitement I did as a child, though I guess that's just a part of growing up...

Xbox’s failure in Japan and why there won’t be a PS4

Recently we’ve seen a multitude of reports indicating retailers in Japan are scaling back Microsoft’s Xbox 360 from store shelves, some are even removing it altogether.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011...
http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/a...
http://www.next-gen.biz/new...

It got me wondering about the possible reasons why MS could let an entire region slip through their fingers and the impact it could have on next generation of consoles. If you were to believe the majority of ‘Xbox supporters’ in some comments sections, the Japanese are a bunch of intolerant, xenophobic traditionalists, who only ever buy products produced in their own country. It’s hard not to find this type of generalist comment ironically offensive. On the other troll claw, you have ‘PS3 supporters’ claiming that, and I quote, “Japanese people know a good quality console when they see one”, of course this is almost as equally generalist and just as deluded.

Anyway, I’m here to give you my rational and objective opinion/speculation and not to make fun of ‘those guys’. There’s some little known (in the west, where most other cultures are ‘little known’) aspects of Japanese culture that Microsoft has accidentally put its foot in. Apparently, in the land of the rising sun, an ‘X’ has negative connotations and can mean ‘no’, ’ bad’, ‘don’t want it’ or ‘wrong’. A circle is used as an opposing positive symbol, which explains why Japanese DS3 controllers have the X and O buttons reversed compared to the west. The ‘X’ in Japanese is pronounced “batsu” and the ‘O’ “maru”, this can be heard in Japanese game shows where a player is either “maru” (correct O) or “batsu” (wrong X). So, somewhat humorously, the Xbox could be translated as a ‘bad box’ or a ‘box of wrongness’. This is something Microsoft clearly never considered when their PR team were thinking of a way to grab that all important adolescent teen male demographic. I can’t say they did a bad job as ‘X’ in the west is seen as a ‘cool’ letter, especially to their young male targets: X-men, eXcellent, eXtreme even ‘xxx’. Let me just point out that I don’t think this was the defining factor in the downfall of Xbox in Japan but merely my own speculation based on Internet acquired ‘facts’. This gets me thinking about how retailers will react when it’s time to order all new ‘nextboxes’. I’m pretty sure that MS may have a very difficult time fighting against retailer perceptions unless they change the name of the console, which I’m not sure they are willing/able to do.

Now on to why I think there won’t be a PS4. I’m going to be straight with you now and say that I DO believe there’ll be another Playstation, just that it won’t be named PS4 for reasons similar to my previous speculation. You see there’s more things about Japanese culture that you may not know, unlikely I know but let me continue, such as a certain superstition regarding the number ‘4’. The number four is considered unlucky, so much so that some hospitals don’t have rooms with the number or even floors. This is especially true for maternity wards where the number ‘43’ can be literally translated to ‘still birth’. Also 4 is pronounced “shi” which is the same/similar to the pronunciation of ‘death’. So you can clearly see that naming the next Playstation the PS4 could potentially have a dramatic effect just like it did/didn’t with the Xbox. Well, there you have it, the ramblings of a bored gamer on a rainy day; there’s one interesting question I have raised though...

...if the next Playstation isn’t going to be called the PS4, then what IS it going to be named? Answers on a postcard please.

Angry Birds strikes an interesting balance of repetitive, simple tasks and challenging game play working for the many scenarios. So, if you liked this game on your iPhone or Android phone, you’ll sure like it on your big PC screen. If you are new player, don’t hesitate and join the fun now.

It can be downloaded via Windows 7 and Windows XP and Vista, or Mac support. But downloading can only be downloaded if you have an internet connection for the process to activate successfully.

CityVille Baseball and Soccer Stadiums: Everything you need to know

Just in time for the upcoming MLB playoff season, Zynga has released Baseball Stadiums to CityVille to honor America's favorite pastime. Oh, and the developer added Soccer Stadiums, too. (Though, Zynga might have been better off naming them "Football" Stadiums, if it was going for the international nod.)

At any rate, these two new community buildings will give a huge boost to your allowed population and earn you some major coin. When you reach Level 11, the new stadiums will become available to you. So, here's everything you need to know about the Baseball ... and Soccer Stadium Goals:

Alive and Kicking

    * Place the Soccer Stadium
    * Compete the Soccer Stadium

Both Goals for these new buildings are painfully simple. Once you reach Level 11 (or log into the game at a level above that), a Goal icon will appear. Click on it to open a window that will allow you to place the foundation for the Soccer Stadium. Once that's done, whack the building eight times, costing you an equal amount of Energy. Click on the unfinished Soccer Stadium to reveal what's needed to complete the building.
Finish your Soccer Stadium
Unfortunately, that amounts to asking your friends for a lot of items. You must ask your friends for nine of each of the above items. That amounts to a total of 45 items you will have to collect. Luckily, it seems as if you can add those items to your Wish List once you acquire one of each. Your reward for completing the Soccer Stadium is a massive 20,000 Coins. The Soccer Stadium will boost your allowed Population by 5,000.

Root for the Home Team

    * Place the Baseball Stadium
    * Complete the Baseball Stadium

Again, these are some pretty simple Goals, but the challenge comes in actually completing the buildings. Just like before, a Goal icon will appear if you're above Level 11. Click on the icon to open a Goal window that will allow you to place the foundation for your Baseball Stadium. After placing the foundation and clicking it eight times at the cost of 8 Energy, click it once more to reveal what you'll need to complete the Baseball Stadium.
Staff your Baseball Stadium
This time, things are slightly different from the Soccer Stadium. Rather than requesting items, you will need to ask friends to staff your new community building. You will have to get a whopping 12 friends to fill positions in your Baseball Stadium. Sure, that's far less than the Soccer Stadium requires in items, but these positions need to be filled by 12 individual friends. Once that's through, you will be rewarded with another heaping 20,000 Coins for your effort. The Baseball Stadium boosts your allowed Population by 3,000.

Is EA's PopCap working on casino-style Facebook games? [Rumor]

Is PopCap looking to go toe to toe with Zynga and DoubleDown Interactive's casino Facebook games? According to GeekWire, a bunch of rather specific domain purchases by the recently-acquired company certainly suggest that's the case. Well, that and a recent trademark application ... and a Facebook page created with that very same trademark. Alright, PopCap has been terrible at keeping this whole thing a secret.

Lucky Gem CasinoThe game in question might be titled "Lucky Gem Casino," as Fusible points out that the Bejeweled creator recently changed a Facebook page it owns to reflect the new title. The Info tab on the page reads, "Thanks for visiting! PopCap Casino is the future home of some amazing, casino-style social games from PopCap, the worldwide leader in casual gaming."

With wording like that, it sounds as if Lucky Gem Casino will be a suite of casino games from the developer, much like DoubleDown Casino. And if you take a peak at the page's Wall, a message can be found there, presumably from the company, that reads, "Keep an eye out to experience casino-style gaming from PopCap Games!" A week later, a poll was posted asking fans about their favorite type of casino games--unsurprisingly, the "Slot Machines" category won by a landslide.

GeekWire points out that this might be because PopCap is now owned by EA, which likely has a vested interested in directly competing with Facebook game champ Zynga at every turn. However, it's also important to keep in mind that a majority of PopCap's games (not including Plants vs Zombies) are visibly influenced by a casino approach to gameplay albeit with a far heavier focus on skill rather than luck.

FarmVille Pic of the Day: Hop on a train to Onisuka057's fall oasis

Even though we're in the end of September, the leaves are still green in New York City. But Onisuka057's FarmVille farm is clearly headed for autumn with the yellows and reds of what appears to be the Autumn Ginkgo Tree, Maple Tree, Red Maple Tree, Sugar Maple Tree, and Rowan Tree. On top of that, there's also a Maple orchard below, though that seems to have been thrown in at the last minute. Maybe he can build up the bottom of his farm once Halloween comes around. But he has already dipped into the recently released Lighthouse Cove decor with several Tree Arches, Autumn Creeks, and Outdoor Picnics. So yeah, there's a lot of premium Farm Cash goods going on in this one.

Beyond the colors, the next most striking aspect of Onisuka057's farm are the train tracks bordering it, which are actually two-dimensional, but some massive fence-stacking and blue hay bales have fooled your eyes into seeing an elevated "bridge" hanging over "water." That's the sort of low-cost ingenuity farm designers love to see. But while building a bridge out of fences was a bit of improvisation on the creator's part, limited edition railroad decor did come out in FarmVille last fall as part of the Wild West package, so those are real tracks you're looking at there.
Onisuka057 FarmVille farm closeup
Finally, hidden in the top corner is a plume of smoke that's actually another limited edition special--an Old Faithful geyser eruption from the Yellowstone collection.

Have the trees changed colors in your town yet? Does the use of lots of Farm Cash items in a farm bug you? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

Microsoft Research releases Facebook game for 'research'

Sure you are, guys--we're onto you. The Research division at Microsoft has released its first Facebook games, Project Waterloo, in order to find out how people interact and negotiate with one another across social networks. The game is a turn-based combat simulator in which players allocate 100 generic troops across five locations. In a way, Project Waterloo works a lot like Zynga's Words With Friends.

Of course, we're referring to the one-on-one, turn-based gameplay, not the words. Players challenge friends with allocations of 100 troops either using a slider or directly entering a number in each location on the battlefield. Said friends can then respond with their own strategic positioning using 100 troops, and if they don't currently play the game, they will be invited prior to responding.

So, it might help to think of Project Waterloo as a cross between games like Words With Friends and the classic board game Battleship. Players can also start games with random players, regardless of whether they're Facebook friends. Project Waterloo, according to a post on the Microsoft Research website, is the start of the "Facebook Game Theory Lab." This will serve as a platform through which Microsoft Research explores concepts of strategic human interaction within "resource allocation and negotiation games." The team of four researchers wrote:

The goal of the project is to test the behaviour of real people in game theoretic interactions, and especially those that take place in social networks. Some example questions are: how do people negotiate with one another? How does such negotiation take place in social networks? How can we aggregate opinions of individuals to arrive at high quality decisions? In what ways do people reciprocate other people's actions?

Project Waterloo in action
While it doesn't appear that Project Waterloo will be a source of revenue for Microsoft Research's parent company, the team does use words like "viral marketing" to explain how it will reach new players. Ultimately, we don't see a game like this taking off commercially, but it is another step in that direction, as Microsoft has already expressed interest in entering the space. Just recently, the company began to offer support to developers through its Windows Azure service. Perhaps Project Waterloo and the Facebook Game Theory Lab represent Microsoft further testing the waters.

RockYou seeking skilled recruits ... to play Galactic Allies [Video]

Look, RockYou knows that you're not an architect by trade, and you're certainly no cook. So, why not stop pretending to do things real people do and pretend to be something completely fictional, like a galactic fleet commander? With developer 3 Blokes, the Facebook game publisher recently released Galactic Allies to Facebook, the studio's second strategy game.

The game enlists players as commanders of their very own fleet of star ships in a battle to protect their end of the galaxy from alien enemies. In a more casual approach to the growing sub genre of hardcore strategy games on Facebook, Galactic Allies lets players directly control their space-faring units to avoid enemy fire in real-time combat. (Of course, battles are exchanged between players asynchronously.)

While it's not marketed as such, the game looks a lot like the spiritual successor to 3 Blokes's first game on Facebook, Galactic Trader. But this time around, the developer has resources from a major publisher, which can only mean one thing: a goofy trailer displaying almost everything the game has to offer in a 60-second nutshell.
Gallery: Galactic Allies on Facebook
Also, the game wasn't exactly live when we first revealed it to you, so check out the fun trailer down there. And when you're done with that, click on the link below to hop into Galactic Allies. That is, if you think you can answer the call--come on, even the narrator wants in.

Cafe World Roasting Pit: Everything you need to know

On top of being required to complete five new goals in Cafe World's Manny's Journey set, the game's two-year anniversary event has received another building project as well. This "buildable" is the Roasting Pit, the base of which will be given to you for free when you start these Manny's Journeys goals. While you may think you can simply place the base and then forget about it, if you're interested in completing these goals, and subsequently unlocking any of the four recipes associated with them, you'll be required to complete its construction.

Once you place the Roasting Pit, you'll be able to begin the process of asking your friends for building materials. You'll need to collect eight Bags of Coal, 10 Steel Plates, six Roasting Sticks and six Roasting Pit Stones. The Bags of Coal are the only items you'll be able to ask for via a general post to your news feed / wall, while the other three items are earned via individual gift requests sent to those friends that you think would be the most likely to help you.

Once you finish this Roasting Pit, you'll not only have a new "decorative" machine in your cafe, but you'll also be able to earn a single bonus mastery point for each Filipino dish you serve while the Roasting Pit is displayed and therefore "active" in your cafe. That is, instead of earning a single point for each Filipino dish, this Roasting Pit will cause you to earn two points with every serving, well, served. Also, even if you don't manage to unlock all four recipes in the Manny's Journey goal set, this Roasting Pit will still have a purpose, as a single, pre-existing dish falls under the Filipino heading: Chicken Adobo.

Again, this machine must be built in order to complete the Manny's Journey goal set in Cafe World, so check out our guide to doing just that to have the best shot of earning some new dishes - and fast!

What do you think of the Roasting Pit? Do you like items like this that allow you to earn bonus dish mastery points? Let us know in the comments.

CityVille Executive Driving Range Attraction: Everything you need to know

It seems that just as quickly as we can finish the construction on an Attraction in CityVille, another one is released. Such is the case this week, as the Ferris Wheel has been followed up by the Executive Driving Range, or a golf range, if you prefer.

The base of the Executive Driving Range costs 10,000 coins, and it must be whacked eight times before the base is complete. From there, you'll need to collect various building materials, as you might have expected:

    * 5 City Seals
    * 5 Golf Balls
    * 5 Buckets
    * 5 Netting
    * 5 Targets

If you're lucky, you'll already have the City Seals in your account waiting for you, and can then concentrate on gathering the other four items instead. Golf Balls and Buckets can be earned by posting a general news item to your wall, while Netting and Targets are earned via individual gift requests sent to friends.

Once the Executive Driving Range is complete, you can put it into operation for five minutes at a time. Once the five minutes has passed, you'll collect your profits just as you would any other business (your income ranges from 1,400 to 6,000 coins each cycle), but you can't restock it with Goods. Instead, you'll need to wait for a countdown timer to hit zero before you can restart it. You can collect Wrenches from your friends to speed up this timer, but remember - you can only post a single request for Wrenches, which are shared among all of the four available Attractions, so you won't be able to stock up as greatly as you might like.

Of course, building the Executive Driving Range is entirely voluntary, but if you like features such as this, why not give it a swing? Note: you must be at least level 25 to access the Executive Driving Range.

Will you build the Executive Driving Range in your town, or are three attractions enough? Sound off in the comments.

CityVille Reel World Timed Goal: Everything you need to know

A new timed goal has launched in CityVille this week, taking us back to the great outdoors for some fishing. If you're level 35 or above, you'll have access to this goal, which can be started at any point in your game - it's up to you when exactly you'll begin. Using our guide to the goal, you should be able to prepare yourself as much as possible before actually starting the goal, and that way you'll have a better chance of earning the gold trophy and the prizes that come with it.

The Reel World

    * Get 10 Fishing Lures
    * Harvest 30 Pumpkins
    * Collect 8 Times from a Seafood Restaurant

A Seafood Restaurant costs just 7,500 coins to purchase from the store, and if you're a veteran player in the game, it's highly unlikely that you don't already have at least one sitting in your town. It requires 140 Goods to operate, so your best bet to completing this particular task quickly would be to make it the only business that currently has Goods, so all citizens will flock to it, causing it to sell out much faster than normal. Pumpkins, meanwhile, take 18 hours to harvest, so unless you follow our suggestion of having pumpkins already to harvest before starting this goal, that's some serious time you'll spend (waste), waiting for them to grow.

If you can complete these three tasks within the first 24 hours of starting the goal, you'll receive the Gold Trophy, a Sailboat, 2,300 coins and 1,200 Goods. Unfortunately, you must complete this goal at this top level to receive the Sailboat. If you don't finish within the first day, but can complete the goal before the 72-hour mark has passed, you'll receive the Silver Trophy, 2,600 coins and 1,200 Goods, while finishing at any point after that cutoff gives you the Bronze Trophy and 1,200 Goods.

Luckily, it seems that these timed goals are becoming a bit easier with each one that's released. So long as you plan ahead with the pumpkin task, you should have no real trouble finishing this one off in 24 hours, but we still wish you good luck in your attempt!

What do you think of this latest timed goal? Have you received the Gold Trophy on any timed goals in the past? Sound off in the comments.

CityVille Campaign Committee Goal: Everything you need to know

If you're looking for a way to earn extra coins, XP and Zoning Permits in CityVille, and you have a lot of friends that are always willing to help you out, you might be interested in the new "Campaign Committee" goal that was launched this week in the game. This feature is open to users that are at least level 15 and have at least one City Hall building in their town. As of right now, this is a one-time only feature, and instead of showing up on the left-hand side of your screen as other goals appear, this one must be activated by you by collecting from your City Hall when it's ready.

The next time you collect your profits from your City Hall, you'll see a new menu, asking you whether or not you'd like to start this new goal. You'll have just 24 hours to collect as much help from your City Hall staff members as you plan your campaign for your run for Governor. There are three levels of prizes associated with this goal, with more upgraded City Halls unlocking better prizes, and the amount of friends that ultimately help you also affecting your rewards. For a Level 2 City Hall, the three level of rewards are 10,000 coins, 40 XP and 3 Zoning Permits.

Once you start the goal (remember, it's a manual start - you can choose to do so whenever you're ready), you'll be able to post wall posts to your friends' walls asking them to come help you out. If you happen to have many spaces filled by Samantha or just blank staff positions, you can fill those by asking friends as well. When a friend responds to your call for help, you'll see a green check mark appear next to their name on the list. After the 24 hour period has passed, you'll receive whatever prizes you've received for your current level (note: you can track your current status on prizes by looking inside the goal's menu, as seen below).

Again, this Campaign Committee goal is a one-time-only activity for your town. Perhaps if it goes over well enough with users, we'll see another opportunity to ask our friends for help with campaign "donations," but for now, just focus all of your efforts on earning the most rewards from this feature while you can.

What do you think of the Campaign Committee feature in CityVille? Would you like to see this be an ongoing feature in your town? Sound off in the comments.

Clarins looks to beautify Facebook with Spa Life, its first social game

Is it only a matter time now before mom pants get their own Facebook game? Clarins, a well-known French brand of beauty products, recently released its own Facebook game, Spa Life. The game doesn't stray far away from games like Cafe World or Restaurant City, but applies the same principles to managing a spa rather than an eatery. Developed by Freshplanet, Spa Life has players managing an influx of customers looking for everything from a "mani-pedi" to facials and more.

Of course, just like its inspirations, players can decorate, upgrade and add new services to their spa. But players can only do this if they serve their terribly impatient customers in time to make the most cash from them. And in true Facebook game fashion, players can always buy their way out of waiting for the next upgrade with Facebook Credits.

According to Mashable, Clarins's North American CEO Jonathan Zrihen saw Facebook as a golden opportunity to reach its audience. And considering we all know by now that the average Facebook gamer is a middle-aged mother, he's probably right on the money. "I knew about the craziness of Zynga games, but I didn't realize the demographic was so much in line with the demographics of our products," Zrihen told Mashable. "I was also impressed by the level of engagement these games create."

Yes, this is yet another branded game, though it's odd that players aren't inundated with the brand until much later in the game. Another interesting nod is that Spa Life attempts to use your friends' names as customers to add more social awareness to the game. Building off of that, you'll need plenty more friends to run your various services, just like you need them to staff buildings in CityVille.
Spa Life in action
Branded games are exploding on Facebook. In fact, studios like Ecko|Code are focusing all of their efforts on creating games for brands such as Showtime shows like Weeds and Dexter. Facebook game developers like Zynga and Playdom have integrated brands into their games for awhile through promotions, it's only recently that they've begun to build games around a single brand.

For instance, it looks as if Adventure World will become Zynga's first game to completely embrace a brand. In October, the game will become "Adventure World: An Indiana Jones Game" with the help of Lucasfilm. Sure, original games will continue to release, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see less of them moving forward.
